Behavior driven development as an advancement of traditional test driven development has become more and more popular among developers in recent years. Tools like Cucumber for Ruby and its PHP clone Behat make it possible to write features "outside in", using plain language to describe a feature's behaviors before writing a line of code. For Drupal however, such a BDD tool is still missing.
Therefore I'm happy to announce a first development release of the Behat module which provides a bridge between Drupal and the Behat library, with more features being planned.
Drupal Commerce, the D7 successor of popular shopping cart solution Ubercart, has seen large adoption since its release in 2010. Over a hundred contrib modules have already been written to extend its functionality even further. Today, I've released Commerce Buckaroo, a module that integrates dutch payment provider Buckaroo with Drupal Commerce. At its core, the module provides so-called "payment methods" for a Drupal Commerce shop that wants to offer its customers the options to pay by credit card, PayPal or iDEAL.
Real test driven development requires that test cycle times are as short as possible in order to iterate quickly, switching back and forth between code and test results. In Drupal however, the time it takes to prepare an environment for each test case is unacceptably long (> 20s). The bottleneck here turns out to be the database as Drupal is building up a complete site from scratch for every test case in a test suite.
SimpleTest Fixture is a hack to force Drupal to use an already prepared fixtures database instead. By that we're getting the test preparation time down to something we can work with for practicing TDD.
DrupalCity will be the first DrupalCamp held in Berlin, organized by our local Drupal User Group (DUB).
I'll also be giving a talk about Behavior Driven Development with Drupal and explain why BDD is the optimal process to prepare development work for flow experiences.
Sounds kind of meta? Absolutely.
When editor-in-chief of german "PHPmagazin" Björn Schotte had asked me to write an article about what's new in Drupal 7, I didn't hesitate long and took the opportunity to exercise my writing skills a little bit. The result is an overview of all major innovations that come with Drupal 7: the revamped admin UI, new theming hooks, the Render Array, Field API and DBTNG API with code examples among others.
You can buy the issue here or just wait a few weeks and I'll post a (translated) version online.
Over the weekend, Drupal designers, themers and developers will gather for two days of sessions, workshops and discussions about all things frontend here in Berlin at GLS Sprachenschule. The DDC Berlin is also going to be one of the kick-off events for the Drupal 8 Design Initiative led by Jeff Burnz.
Visit drupaldesigncamp.net for an overview of all sessions and speakers. See you in Berlin!
Not exactly a developer conference, but definitely the most buzzing place these days for up and coming tech startups, musicians and film makers: South by Southwest aka SXSW. I'm excited to spend ten full days in springtime Austin, TX (expecting around 28ºC) together with my fellow coworkers from co.up in our own house and attend all SXSW parties that are worth it :)
With the increasing popularity of JavaScript as a general purpose language for building web, mobile and even desktop applications comes the inevitable need for hosting an event that gives hackers from all over the world a chance to gather and swap ideas on their favorite programming language. Even though JavaScript has been around for a very long time now, jsconf.eu in Berlin is the first community-driven conference dedicated solely to JavaScript for two days.
Thanks to Icelandic ash clouds hovering over the Old World™ currently, I'm belonging to a privileged minority of Europeans attending this year's North America DrupalCon in San Francisco.
Still, it's said to become the biggest DC so far with more than 3000 attendees scurrying around the hallways of famous Moscone Center.
co.up, a new coworking space in Berlin-Kreuzberg has opened up its doors today and alexo is happy to be moving permanently into this wonderful place.
It's going to be exciting working side by side with such great companies as Ruby on Rails development shop upstream agile, the makers of CouchDB couch.io and many more independent developers and designers.
Alexo has released a new Drupal module right in time for DrupalCon Paris. The Omniture Node module has emerged from the recent work on jaspersoft.com and is being sponsored by Jaspersoft Corporation.
It was written as an extension to the existing Omniture module and allows for storage and output of Omniture/SiteCatalyst parameters for individual nodes. See the project page for a more detailed description and background of this module.
With the many good memories from DrupalCon 2008 in Szeged still in mind, it was a no-brainer to catch an early-bird ticket for DrupalCon 2009 in Paris!
It will become hard though for Paris to top Szeged's performance from last year. And from what I'm hearing this far, some just can't afford a week-long conference in pricey Paris and have to stay away this time...
Update: at least there's free ice cream!
After having worked with Drupal for two years now, it's about time for me to meet the amazing community behind this Open Source project in real life. That's why I've decided to drive way down south and attend my very first DrupalCon in Szeged, Hungary.
hamarosan találkozunk (see ya soon)!
